The Passover – Patriarchs and Prophets

.passover5

Moses had been forbidden, on pain of death, to appear again in Pharaoh’s presence; but a last message from God was to be delivered to the rebellious monarch, and again Moses came before him, with the terrible announcement: “Thus saith the Lord, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the first-born of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of beasts. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the Lord doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out.”
Before the execution of this sentence the Lord through Moses gave direction to the children of Israel concerning their departure from Egypt, and especially for their preservation from the coming judgment. Each family, alone or in connection with others, was to slay a lamb or a kid “without blemish,” and with a bunch of hyssop sprinkle its blood on “the two side posts and on the upper doorpost” of the house, that the destroying angel, coming at midnight, might not enter that dwelling. They were to eat the flesh roasted, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, at night, as Moses said, “with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s Passover.”
The Lord declared: “I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment. . . . And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”     – Patriarchs and Prophets

they are in the presence of God.

Egyptian Period – During this period God was bringing the people from slavery and to Himself.

When we think of the beginning of Egypt, we think of Pyramids or the Great Sphinx. But there was an earlier Egypt – There was Upper Egypt (where the land was higher) and Lower Egypt (which was closer to sea level). Then along came a king who wanted to unite the two, his name was Menes. He ruled over his kingdom from the capital city named Memphis.
It is believed when another king came along, 500 years later, named Khufu (or Cheops). He wanted to be buried in a pyramid, so the Great Pyramid at Giza was built. This started a trend for pharaohs that came after him.
For a king to accomplish the building of the Great Pyramid there had to have been a great civilization at the time.
(The construction of the pyramids is not mentioned in the Bible.)

China, Japan and Greece civilizations also began to grow after the flood – all the timelines have a different time. . .makes you wonder!

When Jews named their babies, the names nearly always had some definite meaning
that depicted some characteristic of the child or event connected with their birth.

1. Judah means “I will praise the Lord”
2. Ruben means “He has looked on me”
3. Gad means “Given good fortune”
4. Asher means “Happy am I”
5. Naphtali means “My wrestling”
6. Manasseh means “Making me to forget”
7. Simeon means “God hears me”
8. Levi means “Joined to me”
9. Issachar means “Purchased Me”
10. Zebulun means “Dwelling”
11. Joseph means “Will add to me”
12. Benjamin means “Son of His right hand”

The Rock That Will Not Roll

Scripture teaches that there are two types of hearing-spiritual and natural. Our natural ears can distinguish the meaning of audible sounds. Our “spiritual ears” can recognize the voice of God as He “speaks” to us through the Bible. Having “spiritual ears” is far more important to learning attentiveness than any physical listening we may do. In fact, without “spiritual ears” it would be impossible to achieve the level of attentiveness necessary to be successful in life. Notice the distinction between spiritual and physical hearing in the following verse:

“For this people’s heart is waxed gross,
and their ears are dull of hearing,
and their eyes they have closed;
lest at any time they should see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart,
and should be converted, and I should heal them.”
Matthew 13:15

“Spiritual ears” begin to be developed as we listen to our consciences tell us how we have broken God’s holy Law.

*Think about it –

No one likes to be told that they smell, that is that they stink.  The deodorant industry makes multiplied millions because of this.  So do the makers of toothpaste, breath mints, cologne, perfume, and gum.  In short, it stinks to stink.

Now listen to the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 2:15-16:

For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish.

To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

The NKJV renders the word savor as “aroma”.  The ESV says, “fragrance”.  This is an interesting analogy that Paul here employs.  He is saying, in essence, ‘when we live for Christ, we smell like life, we smell good; but when we live for this world we smell like death, we smell bad.  Our witness is here communicated as how we smell to others.  When others see us, does the sweet fragrance of preparing for heaven waft into their nostrils, or is it the stink of a life-centered worldliness and immediate indulgence.  Can others tell that you are planning to live forever in the company of holy angels?

Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Now listen to Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:47-49, speaking of Adam:

The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Paul is here referencing not only Adam’s beginnings (made of the earth), but also his choices. He chose the things of this earth over the things of God.  In these two senses he was earthy.  This is why God told him in Genesis 3:19: “for you are dust and to dust you shall return”.  God was basically saying: ‘You chose the earth, and you will get it.’

Adam’s indulgence made him smell earthy – worldly.

In Genesis 27:27 – How did Isaac recognize what he thought was Esau?  By his smell!  How did he smell?  Like a field, like the earth.

And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:

He, like Adam, smelled earthy.  The symbolism here should not be missed.  Paul says our witness is like a smell.  We either smell like life or death.  Like this earth or the earth to come.

Are you like Esau, living for the moment at the expense of the glorious future God has planned for you?  Are you selling your birthright for a pot of stew, a worldly novel, a worldly television show, a worldly movie?

Are you living for the pleasure of patience or for immediate indulgence?

Do not be like Esau and his ilk – meaning Esau or the kind of person he was.

Listen – Esau and his ilk
